Cécile McLorin Salvant 2018

Cécile McLorin Salvant 2018
“If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three—Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald—it is this 23-year-old virtuoso,” - Stephen Holden in the New York Times

"Her blues are blue. Her swings swing...She has vast, almost operatic range." Fred Kaplan, The New Yorker

“She has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace,” - Wynton Marsalis

Do yourself a favor and mark Saturday, August 18th on your calendar, because you will not want to miss this young star that has quickly becoming a legend. Her performance in the tent last summer was one of the best and most talked about.

No jazz singer of recent memory has garnered more honors more quickly than Cécile McLorin Savant. She recently won her first GRAMMY® Award in the “Best Jazz Vocal Album” category for her latest release "For One To Love” as well as a bevy of other accolades and awards including NPR honoring WomanChild as the Best Jazz Vocal Album Of The Year in its annual critics poll.

Ben Ratliff writes in The New York Times, “she sings clearly, with her full pitch range, from a pronounced low end to full and distinct high notes, used sparingly [...] Her voice clamps into each song, performing careful variations on pitch, stretching words but generally not scatting; her face conveys meaning, representing sorrow or serenity like a silent-movie actor.”

Jazz journalist Fred Kaplan, who profiled Salvant in The New Yorker, believes that she has a masterly grasp on exhibiting a wide emotional range in her music. He also says that Salvant digs into a lyric like an actress. "She finds things in a lyric that other jazz singers kind of glide by."
